Peeling paint, staining or damaged plaster may look like a decorating problem, but if moisture is involved, repainting alone rarely solves the underlying issue.
Identify where moisture is coming from
Water can enter from roofs, exposed walls, joints, plumbing or other defects. The visible mark inside the property is not always directly beside the source.
Repair first, finish second
Once the cause has been addressed, damaged finishes can be removed or repaired and the area prepared for decoration.
Avoid repeated cosmetic work
Applying fresh paint over a continuing moisture problem may look better temporarily but can lead to more peeling, bubbling or staining.
Coordinate the remedial stages
Waterproofing, plaster repair and painting may need to be treated as one sequence rather than three unrelated jobs.
